Becoming Your Own Hero

THE LANDSCAPE

53% percent of 13 year-old American girls are unhappy with their bodies.

This number grows to 78% by the time they reach 17. Young women between the ages of 16 and 24 experience the highest rate of domestic violence — almost triple the national average. Among female victims of domestic violence, 94% of those age 16-19 were victimized by a current or former boyfriend or girlfriend. Nearly 80% of physically- abused young women remain in relationships with their abuser due to feelings of insecurity and fear.

HOW WE’RE MAKING A DIFFERENCE

The BECOMING YOUR OWN HERO program inspires young women to be fierce, brave, and strong – valuing self, taking risks, and learning how to be their own advocate.

Topics include healthy body image, distinctions between healthy and abusive relationships, consent, sexual assault, self-defense, coping with trauma, digital abuse, bullying, mental health, bystander intervention and financial literacy.

BECOMING YOUR OWN HERO teaches young women how to discuss sensitive issues, lean on each other for support, and learn how to navigate through negative and potentially dangerous situations, while gaining the confidence in themselves to be their own advocates.

THE IMPACT

Since the program began eleven years ago, BECKY’S FUND has reached more than 2,000 girls through our workshops and training.
