Becky's Fund thanks everyone for coming out on July 3 for DV Awareness Day at the Park!
On the summer afternoon of July 3, 2010, the Becky’s Fund team of volunteers, guests, donors and supporters shed light on the crucial issue of domestic violence at an unlikely venue: a baseball game. Using online social networking, Becky’s Fund helped pull in a great crowd of baseball fans into Washington Nationals Park to watch the Nationals play the New York Mets.
Becky Lee is not just being creative with the entire team of Becky’s Fund, but is passionately and intelligently taking the initiative to innovate advocacy of serious issues like domestic violence. Becky’s Fund directly sold over 330 tickets through Facebook fan pages, happy hour events, and targeted emails. For fans who couldn’t make the Nats game, Becky’s Fund streamed the baseball game and volunteer activities LIVE to the mobile phones and computers of thousands of supporters. DC Council Chair Vince Gray was invited to present a Domestic Violence Resolution in front of the crowd of thousands before the game. “I am honored that Becky’s Fund has invited me,” said Chairman Gray. “Domestic abuse is prevalent in too many homes of our nation’s capital and in too many cities beyond the borders of Washington DC.” Becky Lee, Executive Director and Founder of Becky’s Fund thoroughly grasps the need to use all available promotional tools. “Ever time a celebrated member of the community steps forward and volunteers...one more light is shone upon this epidemic of violence,” she comments. “If we reach a handful of young men and women at an event we believe our efforts to be worthwhile.”
Based on their intense campaigning, Becky’s Fund is sure to have reached more than a handful of people. Through active use of social media http://www.facebook.com/BeckysFund, a new advanced web application tool [ http://Beckysfund.Dakoja.com ], as well as strong word-of-mouth, the organization successfully raised over $3000 prior to, and during the baseball game, and promoted this cause to tens of thousands of people both at the stadium and on national television.
Becky’s Fund is one of the few domestic violence advocacy groups today that is consistently creating innovative methods to expose abuse. Because of this, Becky’s Fund has grown immensely in physical membership, number of supporters, online supporters and members from across the country. There are more methods and strategies Becky’s Fund will utilize to fight and win this battle such as upcoming events and programs. In August, Becky’s Fund will reach out for online votes to win a Pepsi Refresh Everything grant for $50,000 to develop a domestic abuse mobile/web app. In September, Becky’s Fund will again produce their second annual Walk This Way fashion show fundraiser to benefit the cause of domestic abuse prevention and raise funds for their dating violence programming directed at young teenage girls.
